I Settlefish, arrivano al Blue Dahlia Gallery art Cafè dopo dodici mesi in giro per il mondo a promuovere il loro ultimo disco "The Plural Of The Choir", uscito in primavera per Unhip Records di Bologna e distribuiti nel mondo dalla mitica etichetta americana Deep Elm Records.
Arrivano dopo aver festeggiato il 9 Dicembre, al Covo di bolognese, il loro centesimo concerto nel corso del 2005, dopo aver trascorso la maggior parte dell'anno "on the road" tra Stati Uniti, Canada, Inghilterra, Germania ed il resto dell'Europa oltre ad una quarantina di date nel Bel Paese.
Il loro ultimo album The Plural Of The Choir ha ricevuto lusinghiere recensioni da parte della stampa specializzata italiana ed estera (Rumore, Il Mucchio Selvaggio, Alternative Press, Kerrang, Losing Today, Punk Planet) ed in questi giorni ha debuttato il loro primo video "The Barnacle Beach" a cura del musicista e videomaker indipendente Tim Rutili.

Non sono molti i gruppi italiani che possono vantare di avere un contratto discografico con un'etichetta straniera (leggi principalmente americana). I bolognesi Settlefish sono fra quei pochi Il loro ultimo The Plural Of The Choir, così come il debutto Dance A While, Upset, è stato prodotto dalla nostrana Unhip Records, e su cui ha subito messo le mani - per il mercato nordamericano e inglese - niente meno che la Deep Elm Records, gloriosa label di Charlotte, famosa per aver dato alla luce la serie di compilation Emo Diaries (in cui i Nostri compaiono nel nono capitolo).
Nella loro musica la furia e la spigolosità tipiche dei Fugazi e di certo punk hardcore à la Dischord (It Was Bliss! esprime esattamente questo), vengono smussate e mischiate dagli emiliani grazie ad inserti melodici dilatati più inclini al post rock (l'apertura del disco, nonchè del sound vero e proprio, è infatti affidata a Kissing Is Chaos, con la sua iniziale calma che sfocia in un passionale fragore). Momenti delicati, quasi acustici (le strumentali Getting The Clicks Out Of Our Hearts e Rooms) si alternano con una estrema fluidità a irruenti passaggi (le urla aggressive di Oh Well, la velocità di Blinded By Noise, il groviglio di chitarre all'ennesima potenza di Two Cities, Two Growths), seguendo le liriche criptiche ad elevato tasso emotivo. Una introspezione tipica dell'emocore (divenuta negli ultimi tempi quasi sdolcinata e dozzinale), che interpretata dalla stupefacente voce di Jonathan Clancy, l'unico del combo ad avere origini canadesi, assume le sembianze di una carezza o di un pugno nello stomaco (ascoltare The Marriage Funeral Man per averne un'idea, un sussurro misto a sussulto impaziente) e acquista un piglio decisamente fresco e fuori -fortunatamente -dai canoni. Merito anche della produzione di Brian Deck (già in studio con Califone, Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine) e dell'apporto di Jukka Reverberi alla chitarra.

Una duttilità ed una obliquità che può ricordare i Pavement, per certi versi, ed una capacità di maneggiare con competenza materie e riferimenti tanto sedimentati quanto ormai sviliti e privi di significato, riuscendo a svincolarsi da una restrittiva definizione (quella di emo, appunto) e lasciando ampi margini di crescita (se ancora ce ne fosse bisogno).
